Dr. Vassilis Gikas, Associate Professor from the National Technical University of Athens, Greece, visited the department on October 19-20, 2015. During his visit he met with several researchers at UNB and also visited the Marjorie McCain Human Performance Laboratory. During his visit he presented the seminar "Engineering Surveying, Positioning & Navigation at NTUA, Greece: An Overview of Undergoing Research Activities." Dr. Gikas is Chair of IAG Sub-Commission 4.1 on emerging positioning technologies and also met with Commission 4 President, Prof. Marcelo Santos.

A traditional event at The Institute of Navigation GNSS+ meeting every year is "UNB Night." Once again, during ION GNSS+ 2015 in Tampa, Florida, GGE faculty members, alumni, and friends got together at Jackson's Bistro for a chance to catch up with each other while enjoying a good meal washed down with some appropriate liquids.

Alexander Turner reports that, during his summer in Malawi, he has taught a course on survey mathematics and is now researching methods of geoid modelling for developing countries that cannot afford to use proper gravimetric equipment. The primary method that he is researching is to treat GNSS observations as the distance from the center of gravity and then contrast those height differences to that of traditional geometric levelling accounting for general laws of isostasy. He has also been advising a group of American engineers who have been performing a land survey for a secondary school that is in the works to be built. (Photo: Carter Chiasson, 2015-July-22)

The department said farewell to M.Sc.E. student Alex Garcia on February 27, 2014. Alex was supervised by Prof. Marcelo Santos and the title of his thesis is "Development and Evaluation of Precise Point Positioning for Time and Frequency Transfer." Alex Garcia came to GGE in 2007 to participate in the CIDA-funded National Geospatial Framework Project. Later, he was accepted into the M.Sc.E. program, being instrumental in the maintenance of our in-house PPP software suite GAPS. After a period of two years in Brazil working for Leica, Alex returned to finalize his thesis. 'Master Garcia' is moving to Calgary, joining CanAm Geomatics. We wish Alex all the success in his new enterprise and very best in his life. (Photo: Michelle Ryan, 2015-Feb-27)
