GGE sponsored the workshop II Seminário sobre Referencial Geocêntrico no Brasil which took place at the Instituto Brasileiro de Geografia e Estatística (IBGE) headquarters, in Rio, between 30 November and 3 December, 2004 and marked the launch of the National Geospatial Framework Project in Brazil.

Jessica Horan from the New York office of RICS (Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors), visited the Department on 30 November 2004. Jess had a chat with the students about the benefits of RICS membership, and what RICS can do for students. On October 29 and 30 the Department Faculty met in the Biljik Lodge at the Holiday Inn on the headpond in Mactaquac. During the Saturday morning session we were pleased to meet with Dr. Belcastro, Vice-President Academic.

In September, former GGE professor, Dr. Eugene Derenyi was awarded a Gold Diploma from the Technical University of Budapest in recognition of his achievements in the field of engineering over the past 50 years. Congratulations Eugene.

Dr. Marcelo Santos lectured in a course at INEGI, the Mexican Instituto Nacional de Estadística, Geografia y Informática, from August 30 to September 10, in the city of Aguascalientes. The course was entitled Aplicaciones Avanzadas de Tecnicas Satelitales.

A farewell cookie party was held on 18 August 2004 for Leonel Manteigas, recent recipient of the M.Eng. degree. Leonel specialized in hydrography under the supervision of Dave Wells. He is returning to Portugal to resume his duties in the Navy.
