In December 2008, Silvane Paixao, a GGE Ph.D. candidate and Dr. Sue Nichols were invited to participate in an intergovernmental workshop on land registration hosted by the Land Reform Institute (INCRA) in Brasilia. The Brazilian government is developing a new registration system called CNIR for rural lands to serve multiple agencies. INCRA and the federal tax authority lead the project. Silvane's research involves the design of a geoinformation system model for the rural cadastral system in Brazil and has been funded through the UNB PIGN project led by Dr. Marcelo Santos.

Marcelo Santos hosted visitors from the Instituto de Geociências Aplicadas (IGA) of the State of Minas Gerais, Brazil, for 2 weeks in November to discuss the establishment of a geodetic observatory at the installations of IGA.

Marcelo Santos welcomed some visitors from IBGE in October. Meetings were held in preparation for a series of educational seminars on the impact of the new geodetic reference frame, SIRGAS2000, being planned for next year.

On 29 September, the UNB GPS Research Group bid a fond farewell to Dr. Marcin Uradzinski who had stayed with the group for the past year as a postdoctoral fellow. Dr. Uradzinski has returned to his alma mater -- the University of Warmia and Mazury in Olsztyn, Poland -- to teach in the Faculty of Geodesy and Land Management. The goodbye lunch was held at The Lunar Rogue in downtown Fredericton.

On September 25th, the Department said farewell to Felipe Nievinski. Felipe completed the requirements for his Master of Science in Engineering degree under the supervision of Dr. Marcelo Santos. The title of his thesis is “Ray-tracing Options to Mitigate the Neutral Atmospheric Delay in GPS Applications.”

On September 16, the Department bid farewell to Ben Wuest. Ben has completed the requirements for his Master of Science in Engineering degree under the supervision of Dr. Yun Zhang. On June 19, the Department said farewell to Dr. Nianwu Deng from the State Key Laboratory of Water Resources and Hydropower Engineering Science, Wuhan University in China, who had been visiting the Department since August 2007. Dr. Deng was collaborating with Dr. Anna Szostak-Chrzanowksi, Dr. Adam Chrzanowski, and Dr. Yun Zhang.

From May 29 to June 2, Dr. Yun Zhang visited Riyadh, the capital city of Saudi Arabia, at the invitation of the ArRiyadh Development Authority (ADA) to discuss the potential of using modern remote sensing technologies for change detection and urban planning. ADA, also known as the High Commission for the Development of ArRiyadh (http://www.arriyadh.com/En/), is the government authority responsible for the planning and development of Riyadh and the supervision of the city's infrastructure projects.

On April 24, the Department said farewell to 3 graduate students. Stephen Hibbert completed the requirements for an M.Eng. His thesis title was "Mapping and Documenting the First Nations Traditional Activities in Grand Lake Meadows." Richard Chan completed the requirements for an M.Sc.E. His thesis title was "Incorporating the Concept of 'Community' into a Spatially-Weighted Local Regression Analysis." Shawn McLaughlan completed the requirements for a course-based M.Eng.

During the winter term, GGE students were working on fundraising for supplies for students at the Mzuzu University in Malawi. Dr. Santos made a deal with the students - if they could raise $500 then he would shave his beard off. At last count they were over $1,000 so on Friday, April 4, the beard came off.

Acting Chair, Dr. Marcelo Santos, has started what he hopes to be an annual event - GGE Hat Day. On April 2, GGE students, faculty and staff were invited to wear a hat. Judging was open to everyone and at the end of the day, we had a tie for first place.

On March 27, Adam Chrzanowski gave a brown bag lecture on his experiences on the Mount Kennedy Project. UNB's research was included in the National Geographic movie about the 1965 project but Dr. Chrzanowski told the stories that didn't make it into the movie. The Department bid a very sad farewell to Tracey Hawco Winchester on January 25. Tracey has accepted a position as a financial analyst with UNB's Office of Research Services. Congratulations go out to Tracey from her GGE family.
