Career Opportunities
This spring, there were at least twice as many employment opportunities as there were graduates with a B.Sc.E. from the Department of Geodesy and Geomatics Engineering. Companies from around the world were advertising for positions our graduates could fill. There were opportunities in all provinces of Canada, the southern and western United States, England, Singapore, Thailand, and Malaysia.
Two openings specifically aimed at graduates of the UNB program were:
- A geophysical company in the southern U.S.A. had several openings for graduates with our Certificate of Academic Proficiency in Hydrographic Surveying. The only place that this Certificate can be obtained is at UNB.
- One of England's leading port operators was looking for a dredging surveyor to optimise the effectiveness of dredging by the use of computerised hydrographic surveying techniques. Again, the only place in North America to receive a B.Sc.E. with a specialization in hydrographic surveying is at UNB.
Here is a sample of the positions that were advertised this year: Project manager, GIS/remote sensing professional, seismic data processor, applications engineer, oceanographer, hydrographic surveyor, mine surveyor, dredging surveyor, navigation specialist, imaging specialist, geo-referenced data analyst.
Following are some of the career opportunities offered to our students.
- Project manager with experience with UNIX ARC/INFO software/AML programming and with strong communication and organization skills.
- GIS/remote sensing professional with knowledge of ARC/INFO, GIS, remote sensing, English, and Spanish and/or French.
- Geophysical services positions in research and development, seismic data processing, seismic interpretation, and seismic data acquisition.
- Applications engineer for a Global Positioning System products manufacturer.
- Field engineer for an oceanographic and environmental data collection and analyses company in England to maintain a network of offshore weather stations on oil/gas platforms.
- An oceanographer in England to provide field and office support to both the survey and system division with short periods at sea or on oil/gas installations.
- Sell underwater technology products such as towed systems, cable handling systems, electrical and fiber optic slip rings, cable systems, and gyro compasses to companies in the European Union.
- Mining companies in New Brunswick are constantly on the lookout for mine surveyors.
- A satellite navigation specialist for a company in England to work on projects involving satellite navigation, surveying, inertial navigation, and trajectory tracking.
- Assistant manager of the digital mapping department capable of applying their knowledge to digital mapping, geodesy, and computer systems, with a willingness for international travel.
