Biography

My academic background is diversified and includes a bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, and a master's degree and Ph.D. in Geomatics from Seoul National University (SNU). In 1986, after leaving SNU, I was employed for five years as a senior project engineer at Daewoo Construction Company. During these years I got involved with various domestic and overseas projects in Civil Engineering, including highway, airport, golf courses, offshore breakwaters and so on. In 1991, I returned to the Department of Civil Engineering at SNU and joined the Geomatics Research Group, where I finished my Ph.D. thesis on the Global Positioning System (GPS) real-time kinematic (RTK) algorithm for precision GPS positioning and navigation.

In 1997, I joined two research groups in aerospace and robotics. One was the Flight Control Laboratory at the Korea Aerospace Research Institute and the other was the Navigation and Guidance Control System Laboratory at the Automation and Systems Research Institute. In 1998, after leaving these research groups, I joined the Department of Spatial Information Science and Engineering at the University of Maine and continued to establish my expertise in aerospace and robotics.

Since 1999, I have been working in the Department of Geodesy and Geomatics Engineering at the University of New Brunswick (UNB). While staying at UNB, I have developed a number of GPS software systems and licensed them to several leading companies globally in machine control and guidance (e.g., a gantry crane auto-steering system and an autonomous lawnmower). I have been actively involved in the CSA (Canadian Space Agency) project for the GPS instrument on the Canadian CASSIOPE research satellite now under construction. Dr. Richard Langley, a Professor in the same department at UNB, leads this project as the Principle Investigator. Collaborations include JPL/NASA, DLR (German Space Agency), Bristol Aerospace, Natural Resources Canada, etc. I am also in collaboration with researchers in the robotics at UNB by designing software system architecture for ultrahigh-performance GPS positioning and navigation.

Associated with my research, I received the Dr. Samuel M. Burka Award for 2003 from The Institute of Navigation (ION). This award recognizes outstanding achievement in the preparation of papers contributing to the advancement of navigation and space guidance and is given for the best technical article appearing in Navigation, the Journal of The Institute of Navigation during the preceding year. I also shared two IEEE/ION PLANS Best Track Paper Awards for 2006 and 2008 with other researchers. I also received the Best Presentation Awards at the 20th International Technical Meeting of The Institute of Navigation Satellite Division held at Fort Worth, Texas in 2007.
