Dr. Susan E. Nichols
Sue Nichols is a Professor in the Land and Coastal Studies Program at the Dept. of Geodesy and Geomatics Engineering at UNB and is active in the UNB Centre for Property Studies. Sue is a professional engineer, member of the Atlantic Provinces Board of Examiners for Land Surveyors, and is a Past-President (96/97) of the Canadian Institute of Geomatics. Sue has served on the Advisory Committee for the Minister of Natural Resources Canada (Earth Sciences) from 1997-99 and has been active on a number of international commissions and working groups. In 1998-99 Sue spent one year as an advisor to the Land Tenure Service at the UN Food and Agriculture Organization in Rome. Her main areas of research are land tenure and land administration, with a specific focus on property regimes in coastal areas. She was the Project Leader for an NCE GEOIDE research project on Marine Boundary Requirements for Good Ocean Governance. She is also a co-investigator in a DFO-SSHRC research network on Linking Science and Local Knowledge. Sue currently has 16 graduate students working on issues ranging from Law of the Sea, aboriginal land issues, property economics, marine protected areas, and marine geospatial data infrastructure. She has authored a chapter on Coastal Boundaries for Survey Law in Canada (Carswell). Sue has served on several committees for the Association of New Brunswick Land Surveyors advising on provincial policies related to aquaculture leases and coastal zone management.
