What is Geodesy and Geomatics?
- Geodesy
- Geodesy is the science of mathematically determining the size and shape of the earth and the nature of the earth's gravity field. The term became part of our new name because it reflects the Department's roots and refers to the scientific underpinning not only of surveying and mapping but also of geomatics.
- Geomatics
- Geomatics comprises the science, engineering, and art involved in collecting and managing geographically-referenced information. Geographical information plays an important role in activities such as environmental monitoring, management of land and marine resources, and real estate transactions. Geomatics became part of our new name to reflect the Department's expanding interests. This new term has also been adopted by governments and private industry across Canada and is becoming accepted world-wide.
