Brazil Update 2007
(Continued from here.)
The project first became involved with the Mangueira Women's Association in 2005, when project personnel visited the Rio de Janeiro Favela of Mangueira and discussed the project with the enthusiastic women. Two years later, volunteers from the project are now helping the association to acquire a location with secure tenure as a centre for their health and educational activities.
Quilombolas are what Brazilians call communities descended from run-away slaves. The Quilombola of Castainho participated in a workshop about the importance of demarcating their land and treated the project team to a series of traditional dances! In the pictures below one can see Quilombola leader, Jose Carlos, accepting the department's donations on behalf of the entire Quilombola.
